The artist, Gwynn Murrill, was selected to create art work for the front plaza in the spring of 1990. She spent the next year and a half designing and fabricating the two 12 foot long sculptures that you see at the entrance to the building.

The form of the cougar was chosen because it is an animal native to California – and also because we like the long association between cats (although usually lions) and libraries.
